Lung Diagnostics Lab, Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy and Pulmonary Procedures is a HOD department consisting of two Bronchoscopy procedural rooms offering services Monday-Friday from 8:30-5:30. The department is located on the 6th floor of the North Tower of SUF. Each procedure room is staffed with a Registered Nurse (RN) and Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRT). The RN is responsible for moderate sedation administration, assessment and monitoring the patient and the RRT is responsible for assisting the physician with the procedure.

Description of Patient Populations

The patient populations consist of adult in-patients and out-patients of all acuity levels. Moderate Sedation is utilized for procedures with acuity levels of ASA one or two.

Nursing Care

Nursing care is focused on patient assessment, pre- procedural prep, ECG monitoring, medication administration including conscious sedation, patient comfort, procedural care, observation of post procedure patients, and discharge planning/instructions. Nurses utilize patient care protocols to deliver consistent, high quality care. Nursing activities also include IV insertion, maintenance of drips and IV fluid management. Nurses also provide education and training for draining pleural catheters to patients and families. Respiratory management including pulse oximetry and oxygen therapy, airway assessment, safety precautions and patient/family education and support.

HealthCare Team

The Medical Director is a Board Certified Pulmonologist and is appointed by the Chief of Pulmonary Medicine. The Pulmonary Division consists of attending physicians, fellows and physician assistants. The Unit is staffed with registered nurses, respiratory therapists, cardiopulmonary respiratory therapists, and an administrative assistant. A charge nurse reports to an RN clinical coordinator. The clinical coordinator serves as the liaison to an AVP of Operations and the Medical Director.

Staffing Plan

The staffing grid is listed below. The department offers services 8:00-5:30pm Monday – Friday. There is no on-call team for after-hours, or weekends. A late nurse and a late therapist is scheduled and alternated between the staff.
