Nursing Education/Staff Development

The Nursing Education Department at UF Health Shands is located on the 5th floor, room 5175 in the north tower of UF Health Shands Hospital.  The department is comprised of an Administrative Director of Nursing Education and Staff Development, nine master’s prepared Nursing Professional Development Specialists (NPDS), one Nursing Support Staff Educator, one Nursing Practice Transition Coordinator, an Administrative Assistant, an Administrative Coordinator and three secretaries.

The Nursing Education Department encompasses 3 enclosed offices, two classrooms, a computer training room and equipment storage within the main department.  Beyond the 5th floor training space, nursing education utilizes classroom and computer training rooms throughout the hospital complex and in adjacent buildings at the University of Florida.  Most classrooms are equipped with ceiling mounted projectors and computers.  Departmental resources include a scanner, fax machine, copier, laptop computers, low and high fidelity manikins and other assorted equipment necessary to conduct employee training.  Although our administrative/departmental office hours are Monday through Friday from 6 am to 4:30 pm we do offer formal and informal training on evenings, nights and occasional weekends.

The majority of the NPDS have shared offices near respective clinical areas within the North and South Towers. They have designated clinical liaison units/departments and participate in committee and training responsibilities that are divided by specialty. Two NPDS are unit based: one supports perioperative services, and another supports GI/Endoscopy, Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Cath/EP/ECHO. Two NPDS support the education needs of the night shift staf
