Description of Unit
The UF Health Florida Surgical Center (FSC) is an outpatient surgical facility located at 3480 Hull Road, Gainesville Florida. The Facility includes ten preoperative areas, eight operating room suites & nineteen PACU bays. PeriOperative nurses working at FSC strive to achieve a high standard of excellence while providing services in all phases of PeriOperative care. The unit is staffed with Registered Nurses, Surgical Technologists, and ancillary support personnel. The operational hours of the facility are normally Monday through Friday, 0630-1900. The optimal facility utilization is to run 85%.
Description of Patient Population
The patient population consists of patients greater than 13years old and excludes class IV or higher anesthesia risk patients. Exceptions may be made based upon the surgeon and Medical Director’s recommendation. The surgical specialists providing care at FSC generally include General surgery, Orthopedics, Oral Maxillofacial and Dental, Otolaryngology, Plastic, Urology, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Pain and Neurosurgery.
The PeriOperative nursing staff are licensed Registered Nurses by the Florida State Board of Nursing. Surgical Technologists are graduates of community college-based Surgical Technology programs, or comparable programs which function under the direction of the RN. New staff is oriented to the unit during a planned orientation ranging from two to six months, depending on previous PeriOperative nursing experience. Professional certification (CNOR) in Perioperative nursing is available from the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and ASPAN. Certification in Surgical Technology (CST) is available from the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST). All staff that is responsible for direct patient care passes Basic Life Support (BLS) skills. Operating room staff is provided educational opportunities to attain and maintain competence in their role as defined by the job description for the specific role and by the Departmental Education Plan.
