GI Endoscopy

Description of Unit

Shands Endoscopy Suite provides outpatient and inpatient endoscopy on the second floor of UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital located at 1515 SW Archer Road Gainesville, Florida 32608. The Unit includes 10 pre/post procedural bays and 4 procedure suites. The staff strive to achieve a high standard of excellence when providing all phases of care. The unit is staffed with Registered Nurses, an LPN, Anesthesia/Endoscopy Techs, Clerk-PCA’s and a receptionist. The Endoscopy Suite staff also includes a Scheduling Supervisor and Scheduling Coordinators for Procedure Scheduling, which is located at the UF Health Endoscopy Center providing procedure scheduling for both the UF Health Endoscopy Center and Shands Endoscopy Suite.

Description of Patient Populations

The patient population consists of adults in need of all types of Endoscopic procedures including but not limited to: General and Advanced Endoscopy: Upper Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, Endoscopic Ultrasound, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection, Endoscopic Sub mucosal Dissection and Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy, and Small Bowel Enteroscopy procedures.

Nursing Care

The Endoscopy nursing staff is licensed Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurse by the Florida State Board of Nursing. New staff is oriented to the unit during a planned orientation program ranging from six to eight weeks and depending on previous experience. Professional certification (SGNA) of Society of Gastroenterology Nurses Association is available for nurses. All staff are responsible for direct patient care, pass Basic Life Support(BLS) skills and nursing staff are required to take Advance Cardiac Life Support(ACLS). All direct patient care staff are provided training experiences to obtain and maintain competencies in their role as defined by the job description for the specific role.

Health Care Team

The Interim Medical Director is Dr. Wagh. Dr. Forsmark is the Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition. Medical care is provided by Faculty, Fellows, Residents and CRNA’s from the UF Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and the UF Department of Anesthesia.

The nursing management structure consists of a Director of GI/ Endoscopy (Registered Nurse) and a Clinical Coordinator. In the absence of the Clinical Coordinator, the Charge Nurse will facilitate clinical care delivery and the Director will serve as a resource for problem resolution. There is an assigned Charge Nurse overseeing all areas daily.
